If $PATH contains an unavailable hard mounted NFS directory before /usr/bin then root logins may hang. /etc/profile, line 40: tty should be /usr/bin/tty . /etc/bash.bashrc, lines 163-165: tput should be /usr/bin/tput . Also in bash.bashrc tset and stty should have paths on lines 79-80.
