It should at least return a 'generic' entry based on the current framebuffer settings. In any case, monitor detection is done using the BIOS and may or may not work (with nothing I can do about it). Comment 13 seems to be from a different machine than the original report and is likely a completely different issue. I've created a small test program to find out whether your BIOS can detect the monitor at all. Get it from: http://software.opensuse.org/search?baseproject=home:snwint&q=mdt If your monitor is detected correctly by that program but not by hwinfo then it's a bug I can look at. Else you're just out of luck. For notebooks like your Vaio I maintain a whitelist, though.
