Then all the relevant init.d scripts can source that at optionally add a -p arg to the relevant program. I think that yet-another special-purpose /etc/ file with configuration that each daemon reads would be unnecessary complexity ... though I'm not sure that is what you are suggesting. I agree it is a mess. I wouldn't be against leveraging /etc/services and have each rpc daemon do a getservbyname and use th returned port number of there is one. And obviously we would use the IANA names ... except that they are just names, not protocol descriptions, so as noted above, it is hard to be sure that "quotad" is the right thing. Apparently 20048 is mounted - I never new that!
