Another thing that ubuntu does is, that it is not using the VESA framebuffer, so changing the /boot/grub/menu.lst by removing the "vga=..." parameter would be something to try. Other than that, this looks like the problems that the old i810 driver had when vbe_save was used (which is why i suggested to try "-a 3"), but this should have been fixed in the intel driver :-( You could have a look at maybe special options in ubuntu's xorg.conf and try if they help on opensuse, too.
