/var/mail is not something usrmerge touches.

Should this software area be accordingly adjusted by the published package updates?

Maybe move it away.

If "chroot /mnt" works now in the rescue system

It seems that this command did not complain for the convertfs script execution.

the upgrade should be able to proceed from a usrmerge perspective.
