Some time has passed. Before i wrote, that i tryed the workaround in comment 12. In the meantime i upgraded to SuSE 11.4 x86_64. I added KDE repos for kde 4.7 and so on. Now i ran into problems with: kdm-branding-openSUSE-11.4-3.2.x86_64 kde4-kgreeter-plugins-4.7.1-5.3.x86_64 kdm-4.7.1-5.3.x86_64 Everytime i execute genkdmrc this var gets set in the shown way: GreeterUID=kdm This leads to that my kdm cant start. It throws the following error in kdm.log: kdmgreet: cannot connect to X server :0 I guess this could consist of: - I dont know if SuSE "pam" is compiled with KDE support - It could be related to missing Xauth file structure like it might exist on different distros? - The lines, that i read in comment 6 that SuSE is different to other distros. So the Solution for me is: I had to remove the User and Group "kdm" from comment 12. After i did that, i ran genkdmrc twice. Now genkdmrc throws this Warning again: Warning: Do not know how to create missing GreeterUID user kdm But! Luckily this value in kdmrc itselves gets set in this way: #GreeterUID=kdm The scriptlet quotes it out. So kdm will start as root (by default). And it is back up and running again. Many thanks for your Help!
