Login takes a good 30s - 1m on the worst affected machines. As I said in the original post, spec varies a little but these are old (but otherwise usable) machines. Generally AMD K6-2/500 (a low cost AMD alternative to the Pentium 2), with typically 192 - 384M RAM. One machine originally had 128M but I accept that that's below most recommendations. It ran OK once started but spent a lot of time swapping... Another 128M stick and it was much happier! RAM certainly makes a lot of difference to start speed (and indeed to usability). This is being posted on a K6-2/500 with the maximum (for its chipset) 768M - it's very usable.
