comment#9: I would recommend to use hpijs/hplip-hpijs driver
or cdj970 driver for that printer. This is the default choice in YaST.
comment#10: I missed the /var/log/cups/error_log.
Stop cupsd for clean removing of old logfiles:
/etc/init.d/cups stop
Cleanup old logfiles:
rm /var/log/cups/error*
Start cupsd:
/etc/init.d/cups start
do some printing:
lp /etc/issue
and attache again the logfiles, please.

comment#12: No, bug #222552 is not related here.
A reboot is not necessary here. This is the case as long as no Linux kernel
is affected (security update, locked USB device nodes, etc.)
Please try out the recommended driver
