After the system came up again and I logged into KDE, it showed the progress bar as usual but once it was done the screen just stayed black and no desktop appeared. After some hours of searching on how I could get back to my desktop, some colleague told me that he also experienced this problem with KDE4 and usually deleting the ~/.kde4 folder solved the issue. As I was unwilling to completely erase that folder, I started to move away single files that were suspected by me to have something to do with the current state. After I finally removed the file plasma-desktop-appletsrc I suddenly was able to login again.
