This made the screelock appear, and I could login and work normally. Re-inserting AC power blackens the screen, pulling the plug shows it again. A brief KDE notice provided the relevant hint. It said "Compositing has been suspended by another application, you can resume it by using the ALT-SHIFT-F12 shortcut" Pressing ALT-SHIFT-F12 also blackens the screen. now I have a workaround: GeckoHead -> Configure Desktop -> General Desktop -> General [ ] Enable desktop effects # must not be checked! Compositing is disabled -> apply No Idea what compositing is meant to be.
