http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=497812 Summary: CDROM cache seems to be filling up Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: abrahams@acm.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=287907) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=287907) hwinfo for cpu, cdrom, scsi User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.8) Gecko/2009032600 SUSE/3.0.8-1.1.1 Firefox/3.0.8 I've had a problem for quite some time with my two CDROM drives. Operations on them, particularly k3b, gradually slow down with time -- enough so that it's impossible to write a full CD. k3b also takes a very long time -- several minutes -- to start up while it's determining what drives are there. I've seen the same thing with "hwinfo --cdrom". Since rebooting the machine causes the drives again to run at full speed at first, I'm very doubtful that this is a hardware problem even though it might superficially seem to be. I've tried various recabling operations and they make no difference. I noticed that the hwinfo operation seemed to get stuck for a while on a cache analysis. In researching this problem, I discovered a reference to leaks in the CDROM cache that supposedly were fixed. If there is indeed a problem with that cache filling up or otherwise misbehaving, that could account completely for the behavior I've seen, and in particular the deterioration of performance with time. This seems to happen even if I'm not using the drives, but it happens faster if I'm using them. I'm suspicious of a kernel bug relating to my motherboard, since obviously most people don't have the problem I do. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Write a CD with k3b. (On my machine, anyway.) Actual Results: The write slows down and eventually causes an error. Expected Results: Writing is aborted. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
