I don't see any issue in comment 2. Could you be a bit more specific about the problem? Which applications in which situation? Note that MPlayer tries to open the OSS, then ALSA, etc. This may conflict with the other apps if they are opened before mplayer. Or during mplayer is running, the others don't work.
