So it's not a regression. Also I've observed, that the slowness does not come immediately, that may have led me to believe that this worked OK in the previous version. Sometimes it is quite hard to trigger, but once triggered it remains slow until the reload button is pressed. It is also easier to trigger with openstreetmap.org than with maps.google.com, but both have the same symptoms: scrolling is about 1fps. Looking at top it shows the X server consuming 100% CPU, that makes the binary ATI driver suspect. I could try the framebuffer driver, but it probably wouldn't be better, since there's no 2D accelaration even.
