And yes, compositing is enabled, if that matters. There is probably some standard way for modal dialogs - both GNOME and KDE applications use it when you are to type root password for administration settings, why doesn't gnome-keyring-ask use it? I think *anytime* global input grab happens, that must be accompanied with some very clear visual cue, since the situation is horribly confusing.
