The installer simply cannot compute the install size exactly.
There are several factors:
- used filesystem (e.g. ext3 uses journal with default size of 128MB, so the
real available space is 128MB smaller than the partition size. If ext2 would be
used there would be more space available.) More over, every filesystem needs
extra space (overhead) for metadata.
- fragmentation - many small files need more space than a single file with same
size (but again, this is filesystem dependant - e.g. RaiserFS can join more
small files and store it to a single disk block)
- files created by RPM post install scripts - every package may contain a
script which can create additional files. The size of the files is unknown
before installation.
Yast increases the proposed used size by 2% or 5% IIRC, but the system still
may not fit into the target.
I'm resolving this bug as a duplicate of bug #263275, the journal size can be
added to needed space, the other factors cannot be influenced by Yast and the
result would be estimation in every case.
