And yes, this finally works. I have now the current mesa drivers installed and using. The artifacts that were haunting the R600 are gone. So this is a compatibility issue with Radeon drivers and R600. For what is VLC you need to set the following hardware acceleration with the current cards (otherwise video will not be crisp but somewhat big grained) Decode with VA-API with DRM.
