I have repeated steps 0,1,2,3 and 4 from my original problem note for openSUSE. Step 4 I have done this time with Networkmanager plasmoid. That plasmoid only showed up after a relogin after the install.(that problem is reported as a bug) The wireless network is working fine. Even the Power Management functionality works correctly together with networkmanager and KWallet. For me this item is closed / solved. We really need to document the need for following URL: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/p54 Find the correct firmware for your device According to the URL, table and the kernel version I should download and rename the firmware as required for 2.6.29 kernels and above: card type required filename recommended image PCI / PCMCIA isl3886pci download 2.13.25.0.arm I have renamed the downloaded firmware file to isl3886pci and copied it into the existing /lib/firmware directory. I have unloaded the diver with command modprobe -r p54pci and than reload the driver via modprobe p54pci. After that I could configure networkmanager as needed.
