I suppose one could use the full path to the font to work around the problem with the freefont package as well, but it would make the .tex file system-dependent. In my humble opinion, the solution in this case is to mark the package xetex as conflicting with package freefont. Making available both OTF and TTF copies of the same font via fontconfig has the disadvantage of potentially causing problems with other applications too. However, this is the choice of the texlive maintainer, and I see no way to avoid the problem unless this changes.
