I have tested fonts-config output (/usr/lib*/jvm/jre/lib/fontconfig.SuSE.properties) and it seems to work for me at least when dejavu fonts are installed. For 12.1, updated fonts-config is downloadable from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/M17N/openSUSE_12.1/noarch feel free to install it and provide feedback (reopen bug if neccesary).
