The other pulseaudio things are definitely related with the audio driver *and* pulseaudio itself. The fact that your machine works well with Ubuntu is simply because it's using an old-and-good version of pulseaudio. So, you'll get problems anyway later :) But, I still wonder whether you still get the problem with the very latest alsa-driver. Could you try the very latest alsa-driver-kmp? Check /proc/asound/version that you're using the right one.
