Some background app or daemon is accessing the sound device exclusively. The "default" PCM is set up to be soft-mixing but it's only for 2 channel. That's why you get only two channel outputs regardless of -c option. On KDE3 session, check "fuser /dev/snd/pcmC0D0*" output to see who is using the device. For example, it could be artsd.
