Either your X server or your window manager very probably crashed. To verify one or either, please look at the /var/log/messages and find the time when it happened. You should see segfault, abort or OOPS message there. It should tell you, what crashed. If it is Xorg, please provide your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or, /var/log/Xorg.0.log just after the crash. It may be a known crash.
