I agree that usbfs is a poor design, and certainly application programmers and vendors need to move away from it. Forget them and focus on your users - if I want to use usbfs I should be able to make that choice - if you want to make your users aware that thee module is deprecated, fine - have it put a message in syslog, or make me read a warning during the OS install of the dire things that will happen if I load the module.
