This time the reason is compiz being used instead of metacity even if Xgl is not enabled. compiz then fails to run, the error message from compiz is: "No composite extension." compiz-cvs_060621-9 metacity-2.15.34-3 gnome-session-2.15.92-4 I'll attach ~/.xsession-errors.
