There is a supported way to update your system online/live, See http://en.opensuse.org/Upgrade#Running_the_Upgrade Which actually comes down do use 'zypper dup' (dist-upgrade). One very important step is to make sure there are no repos enabled that are not targeting the specific openSUSE release, as they are a clear cause to keep remainders hanging around and cause ill effects on the dist-upgrade process. About the version upgrades: it's almost obvious that almost every package get's touched at least once during a release cycle of 8 months... so a new version sounds in order...
