I've done it. The trick is that you have to go through the LUKS/dm-crypt routine AT BOOT. Pay close attention to the section on the grub configuration. What happens is that the kernel loads from the unencrypted /boot, loads the kernel models required from the initrd to do LUKS, and then asks the password for each of the encrypted partitions on the kernel line of the grub file.
