I think the boot scripts should be modified so that booting continues when disks are missing. I had a similar problem where removing a SATA disk would prevent the system from booting completely. It booted into some maintenance mode. The removed drive did not contain any files necessary for bringing the system up. Real world use cases: - A data disk is moved to an other server. - A data disk fails.
