How interesting; I guess I should get Factory installed somewhere and play; hmm. It is somewhat hideous to debug these very early boot problems - but can you try adding shell=1 to the kernel boot line, and seeing what is in /lib/bootchart ?
There's bootchart-collector and a tmpfs directory. The tmpfs directory contains a lib directory (and then it loops with a bootchart directory containing a tmpfs one, etc.), and a proc directory.
[ also, if you could mount a file-system, chroot into it, and attach gdb to bootchart-collector - I would love a backtrace ].
No such process running.
Also, can you attach the kernel's /proc/config.gz ?
