The 'risk' would probably be on the vmxnet driver that morphs the pcnet32 away (is that used by vbox? I think they bring their own one). Other than that, we'd need to verify if vmcheck returns true also in a vbox or if this is specific enough for vmware guests. Then we could wrap the start of the vmtoolsd service in a 'if in vmware' (otherwise we'd probably have to wrap it with some magic from /proc or /sys, identifying the system).
