As mentioned in the Redhat bugtracker this seems to have something to do with the browser used in the welcome screen. Eclipse starts if I do that: echo "org.eclipse.ui/showIntro=false" > /tmp/noWelcomeScreen.ini eclipse -pluginCustomization /tmp/noWelcomeScreen.ini (But it then crashes, when I click on Help -> Welcome) I'm running openSUSE 11.1, but I have updated Firefox.
