You say "without rpc.idmapd a chown will fail", yet the problem description reports: Oct 16 13:32:15 bax rpc.idmapd[4317]: nss_getpwnam: name '0' does not map into domain 'localdomain' which strongly suggests that rpc.idmapd is running (but maybe not working well). So is the problem just that the Domain in idmapd.conf needs to be set?
