https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=339640 Summary: Nvidia 3D Driver RPMs need Update for Kernel 2.6.22.9 Security fix Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 3rd Party Driver AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rob.opensuse.linux@googlemail.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com Found By: Customer Recent Graphics cards not recognised by 10.3 install (even after updates) leaving slow graphics display due to use of Vesa rather than the Free nv driver. If I were not a long standing SuSE user, but a Win-refugee I should have had problems getting an acceptable screen resolution, and perhaps give up on Linux, saying "it is slower than Vista". To reproduce : 1) YOU for security fixes after installation 2) Try to install Nvidia driver, for geForce 8300 GS as Vesa frame buffer slow and nv driver doesn't want to play with 8300 yet. ( Perhaps Sax2 could make nv driver work? ) My symptoms have been that, Sax2 doesn't recognise my monitor, and though it sees Nvidia card (as shown by log) it installs to the Vesa driver, attempts to force use of nv FOSS driver from Xorg fail (guess it doesn't know about these cards yet). So using the tainted Non-Free binary modules, following the install instructions fails. I checked excellent advice given in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=331621, which has saved me much time (thanks for opening up the Bugzilla base), and have realised the problem is that I have 2 /lib/module/<kernel version> trees. Nvidia RPM's silently install nvidia.ko in 2.6.22.5-30 /lib/modules/<dir>, whilst the running kernel is 2.6.22.90.4. They should check that the files that they install are going to be used by running kernel, and warn the administrator using YaST. I realise I can compile the Nvidia against my kernel sources but as it was not my decision to create binary kernel modules, I shall wait for them to release an update, and test that (having got the Vesa driver running again). The best solution would be to inform the user during installation via webpage that SuSE & Nvidia are working on a solution to resolve the display issue, and to allow them to request notification of problem resolution. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
