This is the expected behaviour. If the startx script finds the ~/.xinitrc file, then it lets this file load the window manager. If it doesn't find it, it lets the system's xinitrc to load the window manager. Now, if ~/.xinitrc does not have any WM initialization code, then the X server exits normally because it doesn't have anything to do. No error messages! I bet that kdm also uses startx to load the WM, that's why that happens.
