According to http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/ at least the r300
and r600 flavors are production ready for UVD, but still work in progress for
the 3D engine side. I've been using libvdpau_r600 with HD 6450 (Northern
Islands series) and HD 5450 (Evergreen series) with no problem so far.
libXvMC_r600 did not work out of the box, it complained about missing config
file /etc/X11/XvMCConfig. After manually creating the file, it worked OK, but I
don't expect many users to take that extra step.
I seem to understand that XvMC is essentially obsolete/deprecated in favor of
VDPAU and VA these days, so it may be OK to omit the XvMC packages by default,
even though some media players (mplayer and xine at least) still offer support
for it. Support for VDPAU is more important IMHO because more media players
support it (not only mplayer and xine but also vlc and gstreamer.)
libvdpau_radeonsi is for the newest Radeon chips, from the Southern Islands and
Sea Islands series. My experience with such a chip (HD 7750) in 12.3 wasn't so
good but VDPAU was one of the only thing which was working well, so I
definitely think we want to install libvdpau_radeonsi by default on supported
hardware. Especially when simple Xv acceleration really isn't mature for these
chips yet. I've not yet tried it in 13.1 RC1. The lack of libXvMC_radeonsi
confirms my feeling that XvMC is no longer being developed/supported by
upstream.
Note that most video players won't use the VDPAU acceleration unless explicitly
told to do so anyway, so I don't think we are taking much risks here by
installing the extra packages. Doing so simply removes one step for users who
want to give it a try. I want to avoid the situation where a user asks his
media player for VDPAU acceleration and it doesn't have any effect because the
required sub-package isn't installed, and the user just gives up.
