It is (I'm guessing) that the drives are configured with write-behind caching, and if you turn the power off before they flush their cache, you lose data. So what you really want is simply a "sleep 1" immediately before power is removed. I had put "mount -o ro ..." in my suggestion because I wasn't sure where this was being done and wanted to be sure that it gets done.
