I don't think it adequately represents what is happening. Bottom line seems to be that the system is relegated to a read only system. Additionally, as stated the system will not boot from the GDM screen.It tr ies and then just reverts immediately back to the sign on GDM screen. There seemed to be an indication that the Xorg system was damaged.I am at a loss for what is causing the problem but it appeared when SMART was installed. I was not able to attach that log at the time. I was able to repair the system with the openSUSE 10.2 installation CD1 by reinstalling PAM, sysvinit and a config file.
