The main difference though will be that I run openSUSE Factory, where VLC is integrated part by now (minus the 'legally difficult codecs'). Those are installed via an addon package from the VideoLAN repository.... The Package, which is linked to PM though is the exact same (from a VLC perspective), except some dependencies might be different. the vlc output you attached does not show any relevant information about anything going wrong (the channel connects, starts buffering, [...]). You mention that at times, you do see segfaults.
