I mostly use Sony Dell P991s for these things. The one I use most has broken or
dead DDC. I tried a few others from
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Framebuffer-HOWTO-5.html too.
All on MGA:
0x163 produces black screen
0x301 is 80x30
0x303 is 100x37
0x305 & 3x317 are 128X48
0x307 & 0x31A are more than 128 X more than 48, too tiny for me to count
without eyestrain or magnifying glass
0x30A MGA looks like 132x43 using glyphs that look like would fit 132x60
Of course, none of those I mentioned today but 0x30A, 0x121 & 0x122 are
proprietary modes. Framebuffer has been fine all along (except in Ubuntu), as
long as supported by the video chip. MGA with older BIOS only supports 800x600
framebuffer, and old Intel (810, 815) no framebuffer, which is why 30A and the
Intel proprietary (native) mode users want this bug fixed.
