James, is the certificate really not valid? Did you open a request to IS&T for a valid one?

Open your browser to https://im.novell.com and see for yourself. This is the root problem: Pidgin simply prompts about accepting an invalid cert; but Empathy is too far removed from the purple stack to do so, apparently.
