Only the X server starts and displays its x cursor. In the log files: first, gdm-simple-greeter throws this: Gdk-WARNING: cannot open display: later on gdm-simple-slave throws: WARNING: Unable to connect to display :1 the last message alternates with the message: DEBUG: GdmSlave: Server is ready - opening display :1 after a while shows this: gdm: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 8.124 seconds the gdm-simple-slave and gdm messages described above then start anew with the next display port (:2) and this repeats till port 5, when the maximum number of X display failures is reached. The X server is still running at this point (as the X cursor moves when moving the mouse). All this can be seen in the /var/log/messages file.
