The stage files were still very large, so I replaced them with ones from the box that I had got booting with 0.97-147. Did grub-install as suggested above and I now have that box booting. Good work! as I hadn't noticed those files were so large compared to the ones on the other box. I just noticed that on all boxes (x84_64 all) that the size of the stage files changed to large values after upgrading to the rebuilt 0.97-150.1. Copied the saved stage files from USB stick back to /boot/grub and ran grub-install, the laptop is the only one that reported a problem. I shall check later to see if the laptop will reboot. # grub-install GNU GRUB version 0.97 (640K lower / 3072K upper memory) [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.
