That's strange as both cases use the same driver. It's more likely the drive checks out when subjected to heavy load. Can you please do the followings after booting with a live CD? 1. Post the result of "lspci -nn" 2. Post the result of "hdparm -I /dev/sda" 3. Post /var/log/boot.msg 4. Run "mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdaX" as root and see whether it causes the reported problem. Note that the command will destroy the specified partition. 5. If the problem occurs, post the result of "dmesg".
