Shortly after adding that comment, I came across http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Virtual_PC_Speaker, which provides PC speaker services through the sound card. There's also supposedly a way to turn off the PC speaker by adding a line to /etc/inputrc as mentioned at http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_NoBeep#Forever .
