https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=292025#c1 Summary: Wrong owner of /dev/lp0 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Printing AssignedTo: jsmeix@novell.com ReportedBy: hansolof.hansson@spray.se QAContact: jsmeix@novell.com Found By: Other This bug report was originaly reported to cups, se http://www.cups.org/str.php?L2441+P0+S-2+C0+I0+E0+M10+Q They suggested this report should also be filed to my Linux vendor. The original report attached below: The problem is that cups runs with the owner lp:lp and since /dev/lp0 has the owner root:lp it is not possible to print at the parallel-port of the computer. Changing the owner to lp:lp for the device-driver solves the problem, for a while, until next reboot since the /dev-file system appears to be a virtual file system. All permissions of the /dev-file is managed by the udev permission rules. The udev and cups thus seems not to be compatible. In order to avoid other potential problem I think that cups has to change it's permissions/running user from lp:lp to root:lp. The problem is known to exist in at least two different Linux distributions as shown below. Kubuntu 5.10 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=39354 OpenSUSE 10.2 http://www.linuxportalen.se/node/6791#comment-39924 (see problem#1, swedish only. Sorry. Translation could be arranged, if required.) How to reproduce: On a new installed system (or a rebooted one) - the file /dev/lp0 has the owner root:lp - cups runs with owner lp:lp => cups should now not be able to print on the parallel port. Many user have silently (see Kubuntu link above) patched the udev rules or the /dev/lp0 files manualy, thus masking the real problem. Response from cups bug reporting team: pipitas 11:02 Jul 12, 2007 Please go to your respective distribution vendor's bugzilla and submit a bug report there. Ubuntu is known to heavily patch their version of CUPS. Specifically, they re-introduced that *was* *dropped* for CUPS proper in 1.2.x -- namely the "RunAsUser" feature. (And what's worse -- while this feature was *configurable* in CUPS 1.1.x, in (K)Ubuntu [and possibly Debian] it is now *enforced* upon the user... ya' know: your system now can no longer print, but it is now at least thought to be a bit more secure...) Ah... I see now that this is Kubuntu 5.x (which shipped a late version of CUPS 1.1.x). Check if you can enable "RunAsUser No" in cupsd.conf. Then cupsd will run as root (unless Ubuntu/Debian did patch their cupsys back then also that much). Also, try to set permissions of the "parallel" binary in /usr/lib/cups/backend/ to 0700 and ownership "root". In that case the backend runs as root. Note: They assumed I'm was the one running Ubuntu which I was not. The Ubuntu report, however, helped me solve my problem in SUSE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
