Yes, nm-applet is not started by default, it will be when openSUSE profile is finished (blocked by another bug).
I also use polkit-gnome-authentication-agent since empower wasn't stable/usable enough.
$ grep polkit .xinitrc .xinitrc~:/usr/lib/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &
This way you can authenticate when you are asked for.
In GNOME, there are /etc/xdg/autostart/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1.desktop to start it automatically. Is there the autostart mechanism for E17? I just try to move /usr/lib/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 away, it still works fine, so this one is not the real reason. Does the /usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd start when system bootup?
