The new firmware is now loaded, but confusingly the "b43-phy0: Loading firmware ..." message leaves the impression that the firmware is actually loaded from disk (where in fact it doesn't seem to be the case; at least it doesn't pick the new one). After a reboot (maybe another trick would also do?) the newer firmware files are used.
If you are talking about the situation just after the new firmware was installed, then yes, a reboot (or rmmod/modprobe b43) is needed. That's caused by an optimalization in the driver, otherwise it would load the firmware unnecessarily often, causing noticeable slowdowns.
The problem with repeated creation of new devices seems to be gone.
Okay. If it happens again, please collect the information suggested in comment 3 and open a new bug.
The final confusing message is about "Support for old firmware will be removed in July 2008."; a time definitely before openSUSE 11.1 was released. So either the support would be gone already, or the date is wrong.
The date is wrong. The support is still there, even in the latest mainline. The comment is already changed there, so it won't be so confusing in openSUSE 11.2. As both problems appear to be just a bad documentation (updating the firmware without reboot is not really supported, the confusing message will be fixed in 11.2), closing as WONTFIX.
