The default, in my experience, would have been to install grub2 on "/dev/sda2". And, in my experience, that works. It's hard to be sure, because the description lacks details. I'm guessing that the failure was different. For some reason, the boot sector install failed. I have had that happen occasionally, I'm not sure why. Manually installing does fix it, but one has to use "--force" on the "grub2-install" command line.
