Good designs are fixed width - because it's about impossible to make a good design with floating elements. Look around the web, all pages with more than pure text have fixed width, just naming the first 4 I tried: spiegel.de, sport1.de, sueddeutsche.de, tagesschau.de I already get complaints because I add things to the right because people can't see it on their 27'' monitors - guess why, because human eyes are not made to monitor that many inches. 1000px at most.
