The package management system was replaced by its next generation, to satisfy needs we identified in the past. (There have been quite some long discussions here which I will not repeat.)
We had not originally thought people would miss the installation_sources helper tool.

I would say the fact that they're bringing somethign back, specifically because peopel asked for it, shows they're listening.
