Booting from a floppy
Hi I just try this latest Autoyast, wondering why the docs say it's recommended not to use a simple boot disk to initiate the install. Seems there've to be some (large) packages on the initial boot media!? Could anyone explain why? I don't want to use a CD or another bigsize media to initiate. All the installation data should be available via nfs or ftp, so why is it needed (from the docs: "... is limited due to the size of the data a floppy can hold"). If it's really not possible how do I use Autoyast without any CD or PXE available at the client machines? Thanks in advance, Jens

Different ways: 1. Create a boot floppy with an etherboot image (using images from the etherboot package) or even using http://rom-o-matic.net/5.0.7/. This requires a DHCP server and a TFTP server on the client side. 2. Create a boot floppy using a network enabled grub. This will only require a TFTP server for delivering the kernel and the initrd image. It also supports bootp/dhcp. Unfortunatly, the grub package on SuSE 8.1 has the network features not enabled. I have created a boot floppy with the possibility to use DHCP and a static IP. Both ways require a TFTP server. For booting, use the kernel image and the initrd available in boot/loader/ on the first CD (8.1). To edit the grub options, mount the floppy and edit boot/grub/menu.lst on the floppy. Floppy image can be found on http://www.suse.de/~nashif/autoinstall/ Anas
